Occupational Health Care - Immunisation Training for registered practitioners

This one day theory programme prepares registered nurses and others working in an Occupational Health Care setting to implement vaccination programmes effectively.

Clinical governance framework

The programme is based in a Clinical governance framework of a practice protocol as promoted by HPA National Minimum Standards for Immunisation Training & Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training, guidance of professional bodies and the Department of Health 'Immunisation against infectious disease' 2006 ('Green Book'), its updated chapters, CMO update letters and DH Training Slides.

The programme is cross referenced to SEQOHS standards in order to meet the requirements for accreditation.

The programme includes

Aims of immunisation: national policy and schedules

The immune system and how vaccines work

Vaccine preventable diseases

The different types of vaccines used and their composition

Current issues and controversies regarding immunisation

Communicating with employees/patients

Legal aspects of vaccination

Storage and handling of vaccines

Correct administration of vaccines

Anaphylaxis and adverse events

Documentation, record keeping and reporting

Strategies for improving uptake rates

Personal and professional development

The training is highly interactive exploring common challenges and scenarios faced by those providing immunisation in Occupational Health Care.

It is recommended that theoretical training is complemented by a practical period of Clinical Supervision in counselling and administration of immunisations in practice.

A set of Clinical Observations & Competencies (excluding Mantoux testing & BCG Immunisation) can be provided.
